The former 5-star hotel in Teluk Bahang with a staff of 1,500 people, was the hotel of choice for many a prime minister and diplomat. It opened in 1988, and has been “closed for renovation” since 2006. Compared to Hotel in Gayasan, South Korea and Tommy’s Ghost Palace Hotel in Bali, the Mutiara Beach Resort is a huge, guarded place. Despite its disrepair, the hotel is still, erroneously, available for booking through some websites. We decided not to book it, but to climb over the fence and take a walk through instead.
