Panam Nagar is a tiny historic town in Sonargaon. This town is not adapted for life, it is surrounded by a fence and serves as a historical landmark for tourists. However people still manage to live in some houses illegally. Bangladeshi residents and local tourists do not pay the entrance fees, but foreigners do. Entering this territory, gave me the impression of entering a “human zoo”, where people piss on the walls of crumbling buildings and throw garbage into the pond. The streets are messy, the smell of faeces and urine lingers from the open windows of buildings. Money the tourists invested in the maintenance of Panama Nagar seem have left a very small effect in keeping this town tidy. Which is a shame, as it could be a beautifully preserved place that aspires generations to come and learn its history and culture.
