The world’s largest trade artery — the historical Great and famous Silk Road passed through the area of Urumqi. We spent a week walking in old and new parts of the city, visited parks and markets and moved to Turpan for few days.
Yarkand
We visited Yarkand at the end of our journey around Xinjiang. It is located three hours south from Kashgar. Similar to the most cities in Xinjiang, Yarkand arose as a place of halt for caravans that followed the Great Silk Road. From here, our road took us to Kashgar, and then in Kyrgyzstan, so we did not stay long, rented a hotel room and went to explore the town. A surprisingly colourful medium-sized old Uyghur town was in midst of construction, where a large part was demolished and rebuilt.
