For 800 years Jaisalmer was an important stop on the way from India to Egypt. Merchants grew rich and equipped the city, built a fort, luxurious palaces, temples, tombs and havelis. At the beginning of the twentieth century, trade fell and the city began to decline, until it was reopened for tourism several decades ago. The city still enchants the mind similarly to the book cover of “One Thousand and One Nights.”
