The worst insult for the independent traveller in Panaji is being called a “holiday maker”. Goa is often mistakenly thought to be a destination for travellers, but there is a sense of adventure and spontaneity that is sadly lacking here. The city has developed commercially for tourists only. Because of that every white traveller might treated like a milking cow. Travellers are not exempt from the rule and are treated as having dollar signs above the heads too. With its peculiarities including baked buns and a Christian influence Panaji could be culturally interesting, but for the budget traveller hostility is the main dish of hospitality, leaving a bitter taste in mouth.
