Have you ever wondered where the most depressing place in India is? It’s covered with grey skies, polluted roads and dead beaches. Where time stops, children play cricket in the mud and goats roam the streets and eat rubbish from sides of the roads. This place is called Tuticorin and it’s located in the state of Tamil Nadu. My desire to come here was to write our story on salt harvesting in India, we picked three places to visit across India, one of which was Tuticorin. Tuticorin produces around 30% of the total salt production in India, which makes it the second largest producer of salt in the country. What we didn’t realise was that during the rainy season the salt pans aren’t not being harvested and the town is a great mess.
